An abandoned ghost ship that drifted into Myanmar’s waters in August has now sunk, officials said Tuesday.

The ship, which has identified as the Indonesian-registered Sam Ratulangi PB 1600, was first spotted abandoned and adrift in late August near the mouth Sittoung River.

Authorities boarded the vessel after she ran aground, discovering the ship was completely abandoned and had fallen in disrepair.

An investigation into the mysterious ‘ghost ship’ revealed that it was being towed to a ship breaking yard Bangladesh when it broke free from the tow during heavy weather and was abandoned by the crew of the tugboat.

Officials report this week that the Sam Ratulangi PB 1600 sank on October 1 off the coast of Yangon in the Gulf of Martaban.

It was not immediately clear how or when the vessel became unbeached.
