The appointment was announced in a circular issued by the defence ministry of Bangladesh on Sunday.
The rear admiral had been serving as director general of Bangladesh Coastguard.
He will be promoted to the rank of vice admiral before he takes on his new role on Jan 26 when the outgoing Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Mohammad Nizamuddin Ahmed’s term in office will come to an end.
The government appointed Aurangzeb as navy chief until July 25, 2020. In another notice, the defence ministry said it approved Admiral Nizamuddin’s post-retirement leave.
Aurangzeb, born on Sep 28, 1959, was commissioned in the Bangladesh Navy in 1980, two years after he joined the force.
During his long naval career, he served in ships and bases in various capacities, including as assistant chief of naval staff (personnel), assistant chief of naval staff (operations), commodore commanding Chittagong, commodore superintendent dockyard, naval secretary at the Navy Headquarters, commanding officer of different frigates and ships, commandant of Marine Academy, and principal of Marine Fisheries Academy.
Aurangzeb, who is fluent in German and French, has undergone professional courses in Bangladesh and abroad.
